Fortunately for Pauline and Pete, who works in the construction
industry, they share similar tastes, so as they visited local
kitchen showrooms, the couple found themselves drawn to identical
styles. ‘We both liked the hi-gloss finishes,’ recalls Pauline. ‘We saw the burgundy colour in several places and we homed in
on it each time.’ ‘It’s quite bold and perhaps not to everyone’s
taste but we wanted a bit of a “wow” factor,’ adds Pete.
Pauline and Pete checked out several possible suppliers but the
most impressive was Kitchenkind Kitchens in nearby Cheltenham,
which caught their attention with its distinctive displays. After
they explained their ideas to designer Alex Lee, he drew up a
deceptively simple plan, maximising the limited wall space and
choosing integrated appliances for a sleek, uncluttered feel. The
majority of the base units feature drawers rather than cupboards,
so that their full depth is used and there is easy access to heavy
items, such as pans and crockery. Having decided it was time to
replace their old appliances, the Turfreys were keen to explore the
latest models on the market and chose a smart induction hob that
sits flush with the worksurface. ‘It combines the instant heat of
gas with the cleanliness of electricity,’ explains Pauline. ‘It’s the
best of both worlds and it’s a bit of a gadget, too.’
Above the hob is a futuristic-looking extractor hood, which has
become a focal point in the kitchen. ‘When we saw the black
glass Elica model in the showroom, we just loved its unique effect,’ recalls Pauline. ‘It’s a real talking point but it’s also very
efficient, which is important in an open-plan setting.’
The couple confess that they’re yet to experiment with all the
possibilities their new oven and combination microwave can offer
but since the kitchen has been finished, there’s been a noticeable
shift in their eating habits, with far more meals now prepared
from scratch. ‘The old kitchen didn’t inspire but this one draws
you in,’ says Pete, who does most of the cooking. ‘We’ve become
better organised about planning menus and getting shopping in,’
adds Pauline. ‘We’re eating more healthily and there’s less waste
because we use everything we buy. I also drink more water
now because the fridge freezer filters and chills it and it tastes
so much better than ordinary tap water,’ she continues.
Pauline and Pete have already entertained in their space several
times with great success. The new room can comfortably host a
gathering as there’s seating for 10 around the dining table and
when the party’s over, the furniture and worksurfaces require
nothing more than a quick wipe down. ‘We love having people
over,’ smiles Pauline. ‘We always felt a bit cramped before but it’s
so different now. Even the kids’ friends are impressed.’ |
